"Watch carefully," Beryl told the princess, twisting the bracelet so a curved blade slid out, "this isn't for hurting anyone, it's to help you escape. If anyone ever ties your hands, you can twist the bracelet and run away. It activates the jewels when you press this sequence, once pressed people will ignore you unless you draw their attention. It's a turning spell, it diverts attention from whatever I place it on."

"Did you need something like this when you were my age?"

"Yes, most children wouldn't need or understand the need for something like this, but I used magic to keep myself safe and I think you need the same protections. Since you can't cast the spells yet, this is the other option." Beryl said closing the bracelet and slipping it into the girl's thin wrist, "I hope you never have to use it, but if you do, it's there. Wear it at all times if you can, even in the bath. Get used to the feel on your wrist, only you can remove it."

"This will keep me safe?"

"No, the guard and your father will do everything they can to keep you and everyone else in the palace safe. This is just in case something happens, anyway." Beryl sighs, "Your father won't give me permission to teach you the other methods I learned at your age."

"What methods?"

"Are there any female guards?" Beryl asked, changing the subject.

"No, the guard doesn't accept females." Noemi said, frowning at the change of subject.

"Do any of the ladies at court do archery or work with swords?"

"Not the nobles, but some of the ladies-in-waiting are trained in weapons so they can protect their Ladies if they kill the guards. I'm not supposed to know that, but Sabine has a cousin who was taught to use daggers and she told me."

"Is there someone at the palace you can ask to teach you?"

"You think I should learn to use daggers?"

"No, I think you need to learn to break a hold if someone grabs you." Beryl huffed, "Ask Sabine's cousin if she or someone she recommends can teach you how to get away from someone, where to kick or hit, and how to fight back if someone picks you up. Your father won't let me teach you, but if you are quiet about it, you can still learn what you need."

"All right," Noemi said, settling the bracelet against her skin, "will you tell me what you're wearing to the mascaraed? I'm going as a cloud dancer, the dress is lovely, and my teacher helped me charm ribbons to flutter about as I move."

"That sounds like fun." Beryl agreed with a grin, "I'm going as a soldier, I want to see who will recognize me so don't spoil the secret."

"I won't tell, promise." The princess agreed, fingering the bracelet, "Is the bracelet a secret too?"

"Yes, you can tell your father if he asks, but not anyone else."

"All right," She said with a frown, "do you keep many secrets?"

"Few," Beryl said, changing
